Tinnitus
This is the name given to the hallucination of noise experienced often in conjunction with hearing loss. In many cases however, no cause for the tinnitus will be determined, and treatments recommended to alleviate or reduce the symptoms or the effects of it.
Certain medications may cause or exacerbate tinnitus, as may stress and or the effects of loud sustained noise.
Treatment
Therapeutic endeavours include excluding causes for and improving any underlying hearing loss, medication, masking techniques and behavioural – cognitive techniques.
Enrolling in tinnitus self help groups may in many cases help in adapting to this chronic condition.
You can discuss this condition with Dr Nicholson or refer to information provided by the Australian Tinnitus Association.
